Sloppy Joes — how comforting can it get? The Kid Cooks wanted to learn to make this and so we adapted the recipe to make it clear and approachable. I also like it because it is written to recall the skills of recipes they have used often — taco filling and tomato sauce . As a result they were at home with this recipe quickly.
Also, Sloppy Joes reheat easily so, if you aren’t using all the servings at once, it is easy to reheat a portion another day for a quick lunch or dinner.
Sloppy Joes Makes 4 servings
Need:
10 inch frying or sauce pan with sides
Large cooking spoon
Knife and Cutting Board
Medium and small bowl
Blender
Get:
- 4 sandwich rolls/hamburger buns
- Ground beef or turkey, about 1 pound (16 ounces)
- 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 ounces)
- 1 onion
- 1 colored pepper (red, green or yellow)
- 2 Tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- In small bowl, put
- 1 Tablespoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
Prep:
- Blend in blender until smooth and mixed:
- Tomatoes with juice
- Worcestershire sauce
- Spice mixture
- Put in medium bowl:
- Chopped onion in small pieces.
- Chopped pepper in small pieces.
Cook:
- Heat pan over medium.
- Add oil to pan when hot
- Cook onions and peppers 4 minutes in pan.
- Add ground meat to pan. Cook, breaking apart, until no longer pink.
- Stir tomato mix into pan
- Once sauce has come to bubble, turn heat to low.
- Cook for 15 – 20 minutes to thicken. Stir once in a while.
- Turn off heat. Serve on sandwich rolls
